Top Nurse Binned for Racist Rants After Social Media Storm

40-Year NHS Veteran Axed Over Islamophobic Facebook Posts

Roberta Batchelor, a nurse with four decades at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, has been struck off the nursing register. The former ward manager, once celebrated for rising from cleaner to healthcare boss and bagging the 2015 Pride of Nursing Award, faced disgrace after sharing vile racist and Islamophobic posts on Facebook.

Boiling Point: Racist Posts Trigger Public Outrage

Batchelor’s offensive posts surfaced shortly after the volatile Southport riots in August 2024. An outraged member of the public complained after spotting several “racially abusive” images targeting Muslims and immigrants, sparking an internal probe by the Trust.

  • One image showed Arab men chasing a child with a knife, captioned: “Next time when you pay your taxes, remember that some of your money goes to the ‘protection of Mosques’.”
  • A split photo mocked migrants on a boat with the line “these give nothing and get everything” against a homeless veteran labelled “these give everything and get nothing.”
  • A biblical quote warned about foreigners gaining power and becoming rulers.
  • Another matched airport security to a man arriving by boat with the caption “Muhammad at Dover.”

The Trust confirmed the posts were hateful and targeted specific groups.

Apology Falls Flat — NMC Deals Final Blow

When caught out, Batchelor admitted to posting and offered a weak apology. She blamed frustration over government cuts like scrapping winter fuel payments and TV licences for the elderly. “I allowed myself to get caught up in all the unrest in the country,” she claimed, revealing her family are from black and ethnic minority backgrounds.

But the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) slammed her behaviour as “deep-seated attitudinal issues” and a serious breach of professional standards.

“Ms Batchelor’s actions were significant departures from the standards expected of a registered nurse and are fundamentally incompatible with her remaining on the register.”

The NMC ruled she must be struck off to protect the public and maintain trust in nursing.

Batchelor admitted to the panel she wanted to quit nursing “for her sanity” and said she no longer deserved the privilege to practise.

From Diversity Star to Disgraced

The fall from grace is stark. Batchelor had been a shining example in the Trust’s diversity campaign and even starred in a 13-minute Instagram video promoting inclusivity — now swiftly deleted following the scandal.

This case highlights the rising crackdown on healthcare workers’ social media conduct amid heightened political tensions. Posting hateful content not only shatters trust but endangers public safety.

Batchelor’s claim of having ethnic minority family ties makes her bigoted posts all the more baffling, laying bare a troubling contradiction.
