Huge Blaze Rips Through 140 Acres of Chobham Common
Surrey Fire and Rescue raced to a massive fire on Chobham Common just after midday on Friday. The blaze has already scorched around 140 acres of heath and scrubland, causing chaos and concern.
Massive Emergency Response at Scene
At the height of the fire, over 40 vehicles including fire engines, specialist units, and 4x4s battled the flames. Fire crews and partner agencies remain on site, working tirelessly to control and eventually extinguish the fire. They’re expected to stay for the next few days to manage dampening down operations.
Evacuations and Road Closures in Effect
Officials have evacuated several properties near the fire for safety reasons. Residents are currently unable to return home. Multiple local roads remain shut as emergency services keep a tight grip on the area. Authorities urge the public to steer clear of the region for now.
Cause Unknown but Heatwave Likely a Factor
The exact cause of the fire is still unclear. However, the soaring temperatures across Surrey this week likely played a role. Fire services are warning locals to avoid lighting bonfires or disposable BBQs in countryside areas to prevent more blazes.
Surrey Police have joined the effort with officers and Special Constables managing evacuations and road closures, ensuring public safety throughout the emergency.
“We thank the public for their continued support of the emergency services and for helping those who have been evacuated,” said a spokesperson.
