Teen stabbed to death in alley near popular pub in Old Leigh
An 18-year-old local man has died after being stabbed in the heart in a shocking attack near The Peterboat pub on High Street, Old Leigh. The incident happened around 6pm on Friday, 26 February, when two people rushed the victim to hospital. Sadly, he passed away shortly after arriving.
Murder probe underway
A post mortem confirmed the cause of death as a single stab wound to the heart. Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Truss is leading the investigation and says this was a targeted attack.
“We’re progressing our enquiries into the circumstances behind this young man’s death and are treating it as a targeted incident,” said DCI Truss. “My officers are supporting his family at this distressing time. We understand the wider community will be shaken by this.”
Police urge anyone with information to come forward and warn against taking the law into their own hands. “Let us investigate so we can bring people to justice,” DCI Truss added.
Increased police presence and stop-and-search powers
To keep residents safe and prevent further violence, officers are stepping up patrols in Old Leigh, especially around High Street and the seawall area. Stop and search powers under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 have been authorised. This lets police search anyone without needing reasonable suspicion.
These powers are active from 5pm Saturday, 27 February until 2am Sunday, 28 February. A dispersal order will also be in effect during these times.
“The decision to use these powers is never taken lightly,” said Chief Inspector Chris Bradford. “But given the tragic events, we are determined to identify anyone carrying weapons or intending to commit crime.”
Community urged to share info, respect victim’s family
CI Bradford praised the public for their help so far and encouraged more witnesses to come forward.
“Detectives are working tirelessly. Please share any information, no matter how small,” he said. “Officers and community safety officers will maintain a strong presence over the weekend.”
He added that a vigil has been organised but asked people to pay their respects privately from home to avoid disruption.
Two men arrested
A 31-year-old from Westcliff and a 19-year-old from Rayleigh were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. Both remain in custody for questioning.
