Reading Knife Attack: Terror Probe Intensifies
Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) is racing to get to the bottom of the shocking knife attack that rocked Reading on the evening of June 20.
Suspect Re-Arrested on Terror Charges
The 25-year-old man from Reading, first arrested on suspicion of murder, was re-arrested under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000. Detectives from CTPSE are leading the investigation.
Detective Chief Superintendent Kath Barnes, head of CTPSE, said: “The investigation continues to move at a fast pace. We know the suspect entered Forbury Gardens and attacked members of the public with a knife, leaving three people dead and three injured requiring hospital treatment.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families mourning their loved ones. We’re working with the coroner to identify those who died and support their relatives.”
Swift Police Response and Ongoing Appeal
Thames Valley Police confirmed the suspect was arrested within five minutes of the first call. Officers rapidly swarmed the scene.
DCS Barnes urged the public: “Please show restraint — do not share images or footage of the attack on social media. If you witnessed the event or have any information, call Thames Valley Police on 101 quoting Operation Vaselike. Share any videos at ukpoliceimageappeal.co.uk.”
Police warned against public speculation about the suspect’s identity to protect the investigation’s integrity. Cordon zones remain in place as detectives comb the crime scene, with thanks extended to the public for their patience.
Police Call for Vigilance and Community Support
DCS Barnes added: “While we investigate motives, we’re confident this is an isolated attack. We urge everyone to remain alert. If you see or hear something suspicious, trust your instincts and ACT. Report in confidence at gov.uk/ACT or call 0800 789 321.
“In an emergency, always dial 999. And if caught in a weapons attack, remember the Run, Hide, Tell procedure.”
Chief Constable John Campbell praised the bravery of police officers and members of the public who helped at the distressing scene. He vowed: “You’ll see an increased police presence around Reading. If you have concerns, please approach officers. We thank the community for their support, patience, and understanding during this tragic time.”
