Canterbury Man Duped in Police Impersonation Scam
A Canterbury resident was conned out of cash on Monday, 21 March 2022, after falling victim to a slick scam call. The caller pretended to be a Watford police officer claiming they had arrested a woman carrying a fortune in cash. Worse, the victim was accused of supplying her with the money.
Scam Turns Sour in Broadstairs and Birchington
The tactic was repeated the next day, targeting folks in Broadstairs and Birchington. Thankfully, these residents saw through the ruse, hanging up before sharing any details. The con artists also changed badges, claiming to be from Milton Keynes and Paddington police.
Inspector’s Warning: Don’t Fall for These Tricks
“Be alert to any callers claiming to be police officers and asking for your bank cards or cash to be handed to a courier,” warned Inspector Guy Thompson of Canterbury Community Safety Unit.
“They often try to worry you with stories of fraud or cloned cards to win your trust. No police officer will ever ask for your money or bank details over the phone. If you get a call like this, hang up immediately.”
How to Stay Safe from Courier Scams
- Never give money or bank cards to a courier after a phone call like this.
- If unsure about a caller claiming to be police, take their details, then end the call.
- Wait five minutes, then call 101 (or 999 in an emergency) to confirm if the call was genuine.
