Bus Hits Deadly Mine Near Burkina Faso-Niger Border
A bus travelling from the market town of Fada N’Gourma to Kantchari near the Niger border struck a landmine on Sunday afternoon. The explosion happened close to the village of Bougui, about 220km from the capital Ouagadougou, officials confirmed.
Chaos and Disappearances After Blast
Colonel Hubert Yameogo, the regional governor, revealed that the injured were rushed to hospital in Fada N’Gourma. Alarming reports say the rest of the passengers vanished after the incident. Authorities are desperately searching for the missing passengers while working to restore security in the volatile area.
Conflict with Jihadists Blamed for Rising Violence
No group has claimed responsibility yet, but the blast took place in a hotspot for fighters linked to al-Qaeda in North Africa and ISIL. Burkina Faso has been plagued by a surge of jihadist violence for over six years. The unrest has killed thousands and forced nearly two million people to flee their homes.
Government Struggles Amid Military Coups
The ongoing chaos and government failures to curb attacks have sparked two military coups this year. Each new leader has vowed to crack down on militancy and restore security – but so far, the jihadist threat shows no sign of fading.
