A fiery scare rocked Wimbledon on the morning of January 11 when one of London’s famous red electric double-decker buses suddenly caught fire. The dramatic blaze sent thick black smoke billowing over Wimbledon Hill and Alwyne Road, sparking panic among locals.

Thankfully, the bus was swiftly evacuated and no one was hurt. Emergency services, including the London Fire Brigade and police, rushed to the scene and sealed off the road in both directions. Witness Max Pashley recalled the terrifying moment: “We heard a huge bang. We were terrified.”
TfL Sounds Reassurance – Electric Buses Are Safe
Transport for London (TfL) moved quickly to calm public fears about the safety of its electric buses. Tom Cunnington, TfL’s Head of Buses Business Development, stressed safety remains the top priority. He confirmed: “We are working with the operator, London General, and the manufacturer, Switch, to investigate what happened. The bus was quickly evacuated, and there are no reported injuries.”
TfL reassured Londoners that the rest of the electric bus fleet is still running safely and that they will take all necessary steps to keep the capital’s transport system secure.
