Hero Cop Saves Whaley Bridge from Flood Disaster
PC Geoff Marshall from Derbyshire risked his life to stop a catastrophic flood at Toddbrook Reservoir. His daring actions helped save thousands and earned him a nomination for “outstanding bravery.”
Dam on the Brink of Collapse
In August 2019, heavy rains caused severe damage to the 250-metre Toddbrook dam. A massive section of the wall was swept away, triggering fears it would fail completely and unleash billions of litres of water onto Whaley Bridge below.
Emergency crews sprang into action, evacuating 1,000 residents from the flood zone. The clock was ticking to prevent disaster.
Sandbagging on the Edge
PC Marshall volunteered for the most dangerous job: sandbagging the damaged spillway while secured by a rope. For two tense hours, police officers and mountain rescue teams passed sandbags along the wall to hold the dam together.
“It is highly unlikely any of those involved would have survived a dam failure,” said Derbyshire Police Federation Chair Tony Wetton. “PC Marshall went over and above the call of duty, supported by his brave colleagues.”
Close Call Averted
The following day, an RAF Chinook delivered heavy aggregate to reinforce the dam. Over five days, 530 tonnes of material was used to patch the structure. After a nerve-wracking week, the dam was secured and the reservoir drained.
PC Marshall’s courage helped avert a devastating flood and protect the entire community.
