Tragedy at Sea: A 60-year-old man has died following a violent incident aboard the luxury cruise ship MSC Virtuosa.
Deadly Scuffle Rocks MSC Virtuosa
The fatal altercation happened around 8:30pm on Saturday, May 3, while the MSC Virtuosa was en route to Bruges, Belgium. The ship docked back in Southampton on Monday morning, where a 57-year-old man from Exeter was arrested on suspicion of murder.
Hampshire Constabulary confirmed the victim’s next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.
Heartfelt Tributes Pour In
The shocking news has sparked an outpouring of sympathy online. Beverly Jane said:
“Very sad outcome for the family who have lost a son, brother, husband. Don’t know what the true story was about, but someone has lost their life.”
Denise Juniper added her condolences:
“So sorry for the family and friends.”
Passengers onboard during the tragedy praised the ship’s response. Paul Ashley, a repeat cruiser, commented:
“I was on the ship and had a great time. I saw no trouble at all. This was my fifth time on the ship. This could have happened on any ship. Thoughts are with the family.”
Another passenger, Christian Lawton, said:
“I was on the ship with my family including my three kids, all under 10. They never felt intimidated or scared. It’s a horrible incident, but unfortunately one that happens in every town centre every week. The ship’s crew handled it as professionally as they could.”
About MSC Virtuosa: Luxury Meets Drama
The MSC Virtuosa is one of the world’s largest and most opulent cruise ships. Operated by Swiss-based MSC Cruises, the ship stretches 331 metres, boasts 16 decks, and can carry more than 6,300 passengers and crew.
It’s also the backdrop for the hit Channel 5 crime drama The Good Ship Murder featuring Shayne Ward and Catherine Tyldesley, with the latest season reportedly filmed aboard.
This tragedy isn’t the first linked to the Virtuosa. In October 2024, a Colombian woman tragically died after going overboard near the Channel Islands.
Investigation Underway
Police enquiries into Saturday’s deadly incident continue. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward and assist the investigation.
MSC Cruises has not yet released a full statement but is reportedly cooperating fully with Hampshire Constabulary.
