Early Morning Balcony Blaze Sparks Major Fire Response in Canning Town

Forty firefighters and six fire engines raced to Barking Road in Canning Town just after 2am Monday to tackle a fierce fire sparked by a discarded match on a third-floor balcony. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) swiftly contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to neighbouring flats.

Firefighters Battle Blaze Near Rathbone Market

The fire broke out behind the cladding of a high-rise building close to Rathbone Market. Crews used two hose reels, a jet, and a specialist aerial ladder to douse the flames, while thermal imaging cameras checked for hidden hot spots. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported.

A resident was led to safety after suffering slight smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service.

Road Closures and Damage Limited to One Flat

Barking Road remains closed in both directions as investigations continue. Damage has been limited to the third floor, with some water damage to the flat below caused by firefighting efforts.

LFB Warns Smokers: Put It Out or Face Disaster

“We’d rather you didn’t smoke at all, but if you do, it’s absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’re done,” a London Fire Brigade spokesperson said. “Failing to do so risks destroying your home and even costing lives.”

Safety Tips for Smokers

  • Always smoke outside and fully extinguish cigarettes before disposal.
  • Never smoke in bed or on sofas, especially if tired.
  • Be extra cautious if tired, taking medication, or drinking alcohol.
  • Use sturdy ashtrays that won’t tip over.
  • Empty ashtrays carefully – douse smoking materials with water before binning.

Fire Under Control Within an Hour

The Brigade received the call at 2.04am and had the fire under control by 3.09am. Firefighters from Poplar, Plaistow, Stratford, Millwall, East Ham, and Shadwell stations responded. The cause remains under investigation.
