Southampton Lucy Mchugh trial starts today

Stephen Nicholson, of no fixed address, is set to go on trial today. Previously in January he entered a not guilty plea at Winchester Crown Court. The former care worker from Southampton pleaded not guilty to the murder of Lucy McHugh in the January plea hearing, and to a charge of sexual activity with a 14-year-old girl in 2012. Lucy, a schoolgirl who was found stabbed to death in woodland at a Sports Centre grounds, Southampton has been a murder case that has shocked the community and beyond. Nicholson, 24, was remanded in custody until his trial, which will start today (18 June 19). Addresses linked to Nicholson were searched and both police and public were involved in a mass scale search around the area for the missing murder weapon. Lucy’s family have spoken of the shock, and have held events since the murder in her memory. The body of Lucy, 13, was found at Southampton sports centre on 26 July last year. She had left her home in the city at about 9am the previous day, seen on CCTV making her way to the area where her body was later discovered by a dog walker. We will be following the case live as it unfolds. More to follow.
