Crash Blocks Sandown Road in Apse Heath

A crash has blocked the main Sandown to Newport Road in Apse Heath this evening. Officers from Hampshire Police have been called to the Nissan Micra that has suffered front-end damage near to the entrance to Sandown Airport. The vehicle is blocking both lanes of the carriageway and vehicle are being made to turn around. A woman has been left with serious injuries as a result of the collision. It is advised to avoid the area and divert via Shanklin until further notice. Southern Vectis has advised that Route 8 buses to Ryde will divert via Canteen Road to Shanklin and Lake. From Ryde, they will divert from Lake via Shanklin to Whiteley Bank and on to Winford. UPDATE 8.20pm – The road has now reopened to traffic, Southern Vectis route 8 buses are now returning to the normal line of route. UPDATE: Friday: A male has been arrested by police on suspicion of driving offences in relation to the incident that happened last night in Lake. Police were initially called to reports of a two-vehicle collision, although the second car made off from the scene. A Nissan Almera, the vehicle that failed to stop after colliding with the Nissan Micra, meant the 33-year-old female driver of the Micra needed hospital treatment. According to the police, she has suffered serious injuries. The male suspect remains in custody today.
