£161 Million Boost to Keep UK F-35 Jets Combat-Ready

The UK has sealed a £161 million deal to maintain its fleet of cutting-edge F-35 Lightning stealth jets. The new contract ensures these high-tech fighters stay battle-ready for global missions.

Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems Win Key Support Contract

  • Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems awarded the vital support contract.
  • Contract secures 140 UK jobs, mostly based at RAF Marham in Norfolk.
  • BAE to provide technical support and specialised training for the next four and a half years.

RAF Marham, the home of the UK Lightning Force, benefits hugely with 130 direct jobs secured plus around 10 more across the supply chain. This hefty investment aligns with the Prime Minister’s push to boost the UK economy and create better-paid jobs nationwide.

The new contract, following on from a previous deal ending this year, was signed by the US Joint Program Office and Lockheed Martin, with BAE Systems handling vital support work as a sub-contractor.

Running until 2027, this arrangement boosts UK operational freedom with F-35s, increasing flying hours and upgrading mission planning, maintenance, and training capabilities.

Defence Minister Hails Stealth Jets as A “Formidable Fighting Force”

Minister for Defence Procurement, Alex Chalk KC, said:

“Our F-35 Lightning stealth jets are a formidable fighting force, putting us at the cutting-edge of air-borne military capability.”

“Supporting more than 100 jobs in the East of England, this investment ensures our jets remain equipped for combat operations around the world.”

Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) negotiated the Lightning Air System National Capability Enterprise (LANCE) contract to provide ongoing technical and training services for the UK’s F-35 fleet.

The multi-role stealth jets operate from RAF Marham, the Royal Navy’s new Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers, and other land bases. With short take-off and vertical landing abilities, plus advanced radar, sensors, and electronic warfare tech, the F-35 boasts true fifth-generation combat power.

Top Engineers Praise Contract as Key to UK Air Power

Air Commodore Phil Brooker, Head of Lightning II Delivery Team at DE&S, said:

“The LANCE contract marks a major milestone for the UK’s F-35 support, showing strong confidence in Lockheed Martin and BAE’s ability to keep our jets ready for action.”

“It builds on previous contracts, delivering value for money while expanding scope and introducing crucial capability upgrades that increase aircraft availability.”

“BAE’s on-site leadership ensures smooth coordination with the wider UK Combat Air portfolio and promotes a culture of continuous improvement across MOD, US DoD, and industry partners.”

Under the deal, BAE Systems will continue training pilots and ground crews, maintaining critical components including ejection seats and canopies, and managing a ‘Pilot fit facility’ for aircrew equipment. They also oversee a specialised spray facility to coat aircraft parts, keeping the jets in top fighting shape.
