Chaos erupted this afternoon as a fire broke out near Abbeywood, forcing around 300 workers to evacuate a London Crossrail tunnel. The blaze, involving roughly two tonnes of waste, sparked fears and halted rail services on the North Kent line.

Fire Crews Battle Toxic Smoke Cloud

London Fire and Rescue rushed two fire engines and 10 firefighters to Church Manorway, Abbeywood, after the huge fire started. Thick, toxic smoke billowing from the site led to train services being suspended, disrupting journeys for thousands.

The Abbeywood incident follows earlier drama this morning when a freight train caught fire near Sevenoaks around 5am, causing widespread delays. Transport for London (TfL) has been contacted for comment on the latest disruption.
