Smoke Alarm Saves Family from Early Morning Blaze
A flat on the fourth floor of a five-storey block caught fire in the early hours, leaving two adults and three children shaken but safe. The family escaped before firefighters arrived, thanks to their working smoke alarms.
Children Hospitalised After Smoke Inhalation
All five were treated on scene for smoke inhalation. Two of the children were taken to hospital as a precaution by London Ambulance Service crews.
Firefighters Praise Smoke Alarms for Early Warning
Station Officer Sam Redfern said: “This family was incredibly lucky as they were woken by their smoke alarms. They woke to find their flat full of smoke but the early warning meant they were able to evacuate immediately.”
“This incident shows the importance of having smoke alarms fitted in your home. They give the earliest possible warning of fire and you should have working smoke alarms in every room where a fire can start, plus a heat alarm in the kitchen and bathroom. They should be tested regularly.”
Fire Under Control in Less Than an Hour
The London Fire Brigade received the call at 2:19 am. Four fire engines and about 25 firefighters from Bethnal Green, Whitechapel, Shadwell, and Shoreditch rushed to the scene. The fire was under control by 3:11 am.
The cause of the blaze is currently being investigated.
