UK Heatwave Set to Beat Tropical Hotspots

The Met Office has issued a scorching warning as temperatures in central, southern, and eastern England are set to blaze past the likes of Jamaica, the Maldives, and the Bahamas. London and the South East already hit 29.5°C on Sunday, while Scotland enjoyed its hottest day so far this year, nearly touching 29°C.

Brace for 35 Degrees This Weekend

The heat is only just kicking off. Expect temperatures to soar up to 35°C on Sunday, with the sweltering spell likely to stretch well into next week.

Experts urge residents in affected regions to shade windows, stay hydrated, and keep a close eye on elderly and vulnerable relatives.

What Is a Level 3 Heat Alert?

A Level 3 Heat Alert means the Met Office has confirmed that critical day and night temperature thresholds have been met for one or more regions, with over a 90% confidence the heat will continue. This triggers social and healthcare services to prioritise protecting high-risk groups.

When needed, NHS England steps in with mutual aid to support local services during the heatwave.

Heatwave or Just a Hot Spell?

The Met Office defines a heatwave as three or more consecutive days exceeding local temperature thresholds. Heat-health warnings roll out to health and social care teams to help reduce heat-related health risks.

“We’re at the start of a potentially relatively long spell of warm weather for much of the UK apart from the far North West where it’s likely to be a bit cooler and cloudier,” said meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth.

“For some areas, namely parts of the South West, this is probably the start of their heatwave, but for the more widespread heatwave threshold temperatures to be met, it’s likely to be Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.”

Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, added: “Heat-health alerts have now been issued to the majority of the country, with temperatures set to remain consistently high throughout next week. If you have vulnerable family, friends, or neighbours, make sure they are aware of how they can keep themselves protected from the warm weather.”

Record Temperatures on the Horizon

The UK’s top temperature for 2022 stands at 32.7°C, set at Heathrow on June 17. With highs expected to hit 33°C in central, southern, and eastern England tomorrow, we could be looking at the hottest day of the year — or even surpassing that record.

Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst said: “High pressure will dominate with lots of sunshine, especially in England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland may see some haze and cloud, possibly rain, but most of us will enjoy dry and sunny conditions.”

Temperatures will stay in the high 20s or low 30s during the day, and the nights will remain uncomfortably warm, lingering in the low 20s in cities.

Cooler Weather to Follow

The heatwave is forecast to break later this week when a cold front sweeps in, dropping temperatures back to the mid-to-high 20s. For now, Brits will have to sweat it out and make the most of the sizzling summer days ahead.
