Amazon Van Driver Dies After Train Hits Vehicle at Teynham Level Crossing
A tragic crash at a level crossing near Teynham has claimed the life of an Amazon delivery driver. The van was struck by a train after the driver had stopped on the railway line and was getting back into the vehicle following the closure of the crossing gate.
Van Struck After Driver Exited Vehicle
Witnesses reported seeing the driver stop on the tracks before stepping out to close the crossing gate. It was at this moment the train collided with the stationary van. Dramatic footage shared on social media showed a massive fireball erupting from the scene, followed by thick black smoke billowing into the sky. The area is rural, surrounded by farmland and woods.
Investigation Launched as Train Passengers Safe
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has opened a formal probe into the crash’s cause. Fortunately, all passengers on the train were safely evacuated, with no injuries reported. However, train services between Gillingham and Faversham were suspended. Replacement buses were arranged as engineers worked to assess damage to the railway line.
Tributes Pour In for ‘One of the Nicest Blokes’
“He was one of the nicest blokes I’ve ever known — always first to help if you were struggling on your round. The whole depot is absolutely cut up about it,” said a devastated colleague.
Southeastern Railway’s Chief Operating Officer, David Davidson, expressed his condolences:
“We are deeply saddened to confirm the tragic death of the road vehicle driver. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.”
Amazon and Police Continue Investigation
An Amazon UK spokesperson said:
“This is a terrible incident and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the delivery driver’s family and loved ones. We are cooperating fully with the police and the delivery service provider during the investigation.”
The British Transport Police and RAIB remain on site, working to uncover exactly what led to the van being on the crossing at the fatal moment.
