60,000 Left Parched as Burst Pipes Cripple Isle of Sheppey

More than 60,000 residents on the Isle of Sheppey have been plunged into a water crisis for a second day running as soaring temperatures make the situation even worse.

On Tuesday morning, a Southern Water main pipe burst, sparking emergency bottled water distribution points across the island. But before repairs could take hold, a second pipe ruptured overnight, prolonging the agony for 24,000 homes and forcing 12 schools to shut their doors.

Water Repairs Hit Setback After Second Burst

A Southern Water spokesman said: “Repairs are complete, and we’re slowly starting to refill the network. If everything goes as planned, we hope to have you back in stock late this evening.”

Until water is fully restored, all Kent County Council public buildings including schools, libraries, and children’s centres will remain closed.

Tanker Deliveries and Road Closures in Emergency Response

  • Six water tankers are delivering supplies to critical sites, including Sheppey Community Hospital.
  • Kent Police are managing traffic to ensure water deliveries can reach affected areas swiftly.
  • The A249 Sheppey Crossing northbound has been shut to install temporary water pumps.
  • Water is being prioritised for homes registered with Southern Water’s priority services list.

Residents Slam Response as ‘Disgrace’

But locals say the relief effort is falling short. Laura Forsey blasted Southern Water for failing to deliver to all priority homes. “There is no water at the water points. We are in desperate need of water, but they are not doing enough to get it to us.”

Lisa Peeke called the situation an “absolute disgrace.” She added: “I am on the priority list, but no water has been delivered to me. I only have three jugs left for a family of four.”

MP Gordon Henderson expressed his sympathy, saying: “I share the people of Sheppey’s frustrations and concerns.”

Keith Sentinella-Jones of Age UK Sheppey revealed that the charity’s day centres have closed due to the crisis, taking away a vital community lifeline. “That’s sometimes the only hot meal they get during the day,” he said.
