Cold snap in the UK is about to break! The icy grip will ease later this week as milder, wetter, and windier weather rolls in. Temperatures could soar to a spring-like 16°C, says the Met Office. But beware – snow and ice warnings stick around for parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland to start the week, threatening tricky travel conditions.

Freezing Start: Snow and Ice Still Hazardous

The chill isn’t gone yet. Sub-zero overnight temperatures will persist in many areas early this week. From Monday night into Tuesday, rain, sleet, and snow will lash Northern Ireland and Scotland, raising the risk of dangerous journeys.

  • Yellow warnings for snow and ice are in force
  • Up to 2cm of snow expected in low-lying areas
  • Heavier falls of up to 5cm on higher ground
  • Freezing rain possible in some spots – a nasty surprise for drivers

Milder, Wetter Winds Blow In Midweek

By midweek, a blast of milder Atlantic air will sweep across the UK, changing the scene.

“Milder but unsettled conditions are moving in from the Atlantic later this week. As the week goes on, we’re set to experience wetter conditions, with showers and bands of rain moving in,” said Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wisson.

What Lies Ahead: Rain, Sun, and Rising Temperatures

  • Western hills face heavy rain totals of 75-100mm from Wednesday to Friday
  • Intermittent sunny spells will break up the rain
  • Temperatures could peak at 16°C on Thursday and Friday, bringing a much-needed spring feel

Stormy Weekend: Showers, Sun, and Strong Winds

The unsettled, milder pattern continues into the weekend. Expect sunny spells mixed with showers and gale-force winds along some coasts. Though the icy chill fades, the wet, windy weather could fuel flood risks – especially in western regions.
