Passengers face nail-biting drama as EasyJet jet makes emergency landing in Athens after pilot collapses mid-air.
Emergency Panic on EasyJet Flight
An EasyJet flight from Hurghada, Egypt, to Manchester was plunged into chaos on Saturday, February 8, 2025. The pilot reportedly collapsed shortly after takeoff, forcing a sudden emergency landing at Athens International Airport.
Cabin crew, just serving drinks, abandoned their trolleys and rushed to assist. Medical help was desperately sought among passengers. A screen was hurriedly put up to shield the pilot receiving emergency treatment, leaving passengers gripped by fear.
“We thought it was just a passenger at first, but when we realised it was the pilot, panic spread quickly. The cabin was tense as everyone waited for news,”
a shaken passenger revealed.
Co-Pilot Steers Plane to Safety
With the captain incapacitated, the co-pilot took charge. The aircraft circled over Athens nervously before making a rocky but safe touchdown. Emergency teams were on hand immediately to tend to the pilot.
- Passengers lauded the co-pilot’s calm under pressure, with one calling it a “very big well done.”
- The dramatic landing spared anyone serious harm in what could have been a catastrophe.
Stranded and Frustrated in Athens
After the emergency landing, passengers were left stranded overnight at Athens Airport amid delays in transport and accommodation. Many complained about long waits for coaches or having to splash out on taxis.
“We could have waited up to two hours for a free coach or had to pay for our own taxis. Everyone was exhausted,”
one traveller said.
EasyJet Issues Statement
An EasyJet spokesperson said:
“EasyJet can confirm that flight EZY2252 from Hurghada to Manchester was diverted to Athens due to the Captain requiring medical assistance. The First Officer performed a routine landing in accordance with standard operating procedures, and paramedics met the aircraft on arrival. The onward flight was delayed overnight, and passengers will continue their journey to Manchester today. We arranged hotel rooms and meals where available and apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
Passengers Praise Crew Amid Crisis
Despite the nerve-wracking episode, cabin crew composure and the co-pilot’s quick actions earned praise from passengers. The incident underscores the challenges airlines face with in-flight medical emergencies, especially when key staff fall ill unexpectedly.
Passengers are expected to resume their journey to Manchester later today. More updates to follow.
