Elizabeth Line Finally Gets Full 4G and 5G Mobile Coverage
Transport for London (TfL) and Boldyn Networks have wrapped up installing high-speed mobile coverage along the entire Elizabeth line. That means passengers can now scroll, stream, and chat without losing signal—even in the tunnels.
Mayor Sadiq Khan Celebrates Major Connectivity Win
Mayor Sadiq Khan hailed the upgrade as a major step for London’s transport. “Bringing mobile coverage to the Underground network is a key commitment of mine,” he said. “Now, Londoners and visitors can stay connected throughout their journey, accessing travel info and staying in touch with friends and family.”
The rollout began earlier this year between Paddington and Liverpool Street. The final phase covers deep tunnels under Whitechapel, Stratford, Canary Wharf, Custom House, and Woolwich, delivering seamless service across the city’s busiest transport artery.
Boost for Passengers, TfL Staff & Emergency Services
- Passengers get uninterrupted mobile signals for calls, streaming, and online updates.
- TfL staff benefit from improved workplace communication and safer network management.
- The new Emergency Services Network (ESN) runs on this infrastructure, giving first responders critical real-time data and images during emergencies.
Andy Lord, London’s Transport Commissioner, said, “Completing this project ahead of the festive rush is a huge engineering achievement. We tackled tough conditions to enhance London’s connected travel experience.”
What’s Next for London’s Underground Connectivity?
Boldyn Networks, holding a 20-year TfL contract awarded in 2021, is pushing 4G and 5G coverage across more TfL lines. Expect improvements on the Northern line between King’s Cross St Pancras and Moorgate by early 2025, plus tunnel sections on the Bakerloo line from Piccadilly Circus to Embankment. Coverage will also expand on parts of the Piccadilly and Victoria lines soon.
All major UK mobile networks—Three UK, EE, Vodafone, and Virgin Media O2—are onboard to ensure most passengers’ devices work smoothly on the new system.
London’s Tube Goes Digital: A Game-Changer for Commuters
This rollout isn’t just a connectivity upgrade. It’s a game-changer for millions of Londoners and visitors cracking on with work, keeping safe, and staying in touch underground. Expect more mobile blackspot fixes across London’s Tube and rail networks in the year ahead.
