Emergency Chaos at Heathrow’s Energy Centre as Ammonia Alarm Blasts
A major emergency scramble erupted at Heathrow Airport today after an ammonia alarm sounded at the Terminal 2 Energy Centre, sending London Ambulance and Fire crews rushing to the scene.
Full Emergency Response After Alarm Triggers at Woodstock Road Site
The alarm went off just after midday on Wednesday 20th January 2021, setting off a full emergency callout. The incident struck at Heathrow’s biomass-fuelled combined heating and power (CHP) station, located on Woodstock Road.
This vital facility, opened in December 2012, powers Terminals 2 and 5, providing both electricity and heat while cutting CO2 emissions by an impressive 13,000 tonnes annually compared to natural gas.
Unclear If Staff Were Onsite During Incident
At this stage, it’s unknown whether any workers were present when the alarm was triggered. Heathrow aimed to slash its carbon footprint by 34 per cent by 2020, using the biomass plant as a key part of that green push.
