Public Outcry as New Landfill Proposal Hits Whitestone Near Exeter
The Environment Agency has launched its second consultation on plans to open a landfill site at Lower Hare Farm, Whitestone, just outside Exeter.
GRS Stone Supplies Seeks Crucial Environmental Permit
GRS Stone Supplies Ltd has applied for an environmental permit needed to operate the controversial landfill site. This follows a previous consultation that ended in May and sparked intense public interest, with the agency labelling the site of “High Public Interest.”
Strict Rules Under the Microscope
The environmental permit will set strict conditions on how GRS Stone Supplies can manage the landfill. This includes how the site is operated, plus controlling and monitoring emissions to air, water, and land. The Environment Agency closely reviews the site design, operations, and environmental impact before making any decisions.
As part of this process, the agency works with partners like Public Health England to ensure all standards are met. However, issues such as the site’s suitability, operating hours, and traffic management fall to local planning authorities, not the Environment Agency.
Have Your Say—But Act Fast
Once this latest consultation closes, the agency will sift through all feedback before drafting a decision. If the permit is refused, GRS Stone Supplies can appeal. If the permit looks likely, there’ll be another public chance to comment on the draft conditions.
