Shock Figures: Over a Third of Electric Blankets Fail Safety Checks in East Sussex

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has revealed a startling safety slip-up — more than a third of electric blankets tested recently were declared unfit for use. Out of 547 blankets checked, a massive 188 failed and were immediately pulled from use.

Free Replacements and More Than Just Blankets

Thanks to funding from Public Health, many attendees at these safety events were offered replacement electric blankets on the spot. But it wasn’t just about the blankets. Visitors also received expert winter wellbeing advice from fuel poverty specialists representing local councils.

Meanwhile, Trading Standards handed out crucial information on scams currently targeting East Sussex residents. In Brighton and Hove, Together Co promoted their social prescribing services, helping locals navigate social and health support.

Top Electric Blanket Safety Tips

Keep cosy and safe this winter by regularly inspecting your electric blanket. Ditch it immediately if you spot any of these warning signs:

  • Scorch marks or discolouration on the fabric
  • Visible or poking wires
  • Frayed or worn material
  • Damage to the power cable
  • Buzzing sounds or burning smells when switched on
  • Damaged or overheating connectors where the cable plugs in
  • Blankets older than 10 years — they must be replaced
