Violent Storms Set to Slam England and Wales Today
A yellow weather warning is active from 12pm to 10pm today, as fierce thunderstorms threaten to drench England and Wales. Expect lightning strikes, flash flooding, hail, and up to 50mm of rain in just two hours.
Storm Warning: What’s Coming Your Way?
- Storms kick off around midday, peaking in the afternoon
- Yellow alert zones: Wales, West Midlands, South West, South East, and parts of the East Midlands
- Key hazards: lightning, hail, flash floods, and gusty winds

The Met Office reveals some places could see over half of May’s average monthly rainfall — normally just 70mm — all in one afternoon.
Where Will Thunder Roar?
The biggest thunderstorm hotspots today include:
- Bristol
- Reading
- Cardiff
- Gloucester
- South Wales Valleys
- Birmingham outskirts
Scattered showers could also hit the North West and southern Scotland, but calmer, drier weather will likely return from Tuesday.
Despite Downpours, Heat Will Hover
- Temperatures will still reach highs of 25–26°C
- Northern Ireland and Scotland might enjoy their warmest day of the year so far
Stay Safe During the Storms
The Met Office urges locals to take precautions:
- Secure outdoor furniture, trampolines, and bins
- Check flood risk and prepare an emergency flood kit
- Avoid driving through standing water
- Report any flooding to your local council promptly
Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell warns: “Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop Monday afternoon. Rain may be intense in short bursts, producing 20-30mm in less than an hour – up to 50mm over a couple of hours in one or two places.”
