Blaze Breaks Out at Southwark Flat – 100 Firefighters Battle Flames
Chaos erupted in Southwark as a fierce fire ripped through a flat on Great Suffolk Street. The blaze broke out early this morning, sparking a massive emergency response.
Massive Fire Response: 15 Engines and 100 Firefighters Called In
Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised at 12:50am. Flames engulfed two vehicles and part of the basement below a block of flats, sparking fear for residents’ safety.
Dramatic Rescue: Six People Saved Using Fire Escape Hoods and Breathing Gear
Borough Commander Lee Sandy revealed the tense rescue operation. “Firefighters are working hard to bring the fire under control. Around 20 people left the building before the Brigade arrived.”
Four people were rescued using smoke-filtering fire escape hoods, designed to protect against deadly gases like carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide for up to 15 minutes. Two more were saved by crews wearing breathing apparatus. All six survivors are now receiving treatment on-site from London Ambulance Service.
Road Closures and Ongoing Safety Efforts
Southwark Bridge Road remains closed as firefighters continue to tackle the blaze and secure the area. Drivers are urged to seek alternative routes to avoid delays.
So far, Brigade 999 Control Officers have taken 29 calls about the fire, underscoring the scale of the incident. Fire crews from Lambeth, Dowgate, Old Kent Road, and nearby stations remain at the scene, working through the night to bring the fire under control.
