Blaze Hits Bronzefield Women’s Prison

A fire erupted on Tuesday, December 6, 2002, at Bronzefield women’s prison in Ashford, sparking chaos and emergency response.

Firefighters Rush to the Scene

At around 4.40pm, Surrey fire crews teamed up with London Fire Brigade to tackle the blaze at Her Majesty’s Prison and Young Offender’s Institute Bronzefield. Five fire engines from nearby stations – Staines, Sunbury, Egham, and Chertsey – battled the flames.

Blaze Started in Inmate’s Cell

The fire is believed to have been started in one of the inmates’ cells. The sprawling prison, located off Woodthorpe Road, houses up to 1,527 female inmates.
