Blaze Hits Birmingham Tower Block in Suspected Arson

Fire crews rushed to tackle a fierce blaze in a Birmingham tower block, believed to be the result of arson. The fire broke out in the communal lobby on the 22nd floor of the 32-storey Cleveland Tower in Holloway Head.

Rapid Response from Firefighters

Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters were quickly dispatched from Ladywood, Bournbrook, and Highgate fire stations. The first crew arrived in just 4 minutes and 28 seconds, launching an aggressive firefighting operation to contain the flames.

No Injuries but Residents Evacuated

“We understand that around 750 people live in the tower block, but thankfully no-one was injured,” said Area Commander Ben Brook of West Midlands Fire Service. “Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy in London last month, today’s fire was understandably daunting for everyone involved.”

He added that 30 to 40 residents evacuated voluntarily, despite most areas being unaffected by fire or smoke.

Fire Damage Limited, Smoke Spread High

The fire damage was confined mainly to the lobby area, but smoke affected the building from the 15th floor to the top. The building’s compartmentalisation design worked, preventing spread into individual flats.

Firefighters will carry out Safe and Well checks to reassure residents. Meanwhile, West Midlands Police are investigating alongside specialist fire investigators, with support from WM Housing, the building’s owner.

Safety Messages for Tower Residents

“I urge all residents in high-rise blocks across the Midlands and the UK to know their building’s evacuation procedures and keep communal areas clear of obstructions and flammable materials,” said A/Cmdr Brook.

“Fit smoke alarms in your home and test them weekly. Have a clear fire plan for what to do if a blaze breaks out in your flat or the building.”
