Luxury Tower Block Evacuated After Fiery Blaze on 31st Floor
Chaos struck Canary Wharf today as a fire broke out on the 31st floor of the Pan Peninsula luxury apartment tower. Sixty firefighters rushed to tackle the inferno, sending shockwaves through this iconic 42-storey building.
Smoke Fills Stairwell, Residents Evacuated
The blaze erupted at around 1.30pm on Thursday, January 12, 2022. Fire crews from Millwall, Poplar, Shadwell, and Whitechapel stations, along with two aerial appliances, arrived swiftly on the scene. Smoke quickly filled part of the stairwell, forcing a full evacuation of the tower.
The fire was confined to a three-room flat on the 31st floor, which suffered severe smoke damage. Thankfully, there was no structural damage reported. However, one resident revealed that smoke has seeped into air vents, affecting much of the building.
Iconic Pan Peninsula Tower Block Takes Centre Stage
Pan Peninsula boasts two towers: the taller at 147 metres and 48 storeys, making it the 37th tallest building in London and towering above landmarks like the Barbican Estate. The shorter tower rises 122 metres with 38 storeys. Completed in early 2009, it remains a symbol of sleek city living.
Road Closures and Investigation Underway
Emergency services have closed nearby roads around West Ferry Road and South Quay, urging drivers to steer clear of the area. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The London Fire Brigade has been contacted for comment.
