Firefighters Battle Blazing Inferno and Spot Rare Firenado
Fire crews tackling a massive blaze at a factory near Ashby were stunned to witness a rare firenado – a fiery tornado created when cool air meets scorching hot air, whipping flames into a spinning whirlwind.
Inferno Rips Through South Derbyshire Factory
Fifty firefighters fought for nearly 12 hours as the fire ripped through a South Derbyshire factory on Occupational Lane, Woodville. The early-morning inferno erupted just after 1:40am on Tuesday, August 7, sparking towering flames nearly 60ft high.
Towering Flames and Thick Smoke Send Locals Into Lockdown
Black smoke billowed into the sky, visible up to 26 miles away. Residents nearby were warned to keep windows shut to avoid inhaling the toxic fumes as plumes of smoke blotted out the early morning light.
Massive Response from Three Counties
Ten fire engines from three counties raced to the scene, battling the blaze that consumed thousands of plastic bread trays. After hours of fierce firefighting, crews spent the day damping down smouldering remains to prevent flare-ups.
“It was incredible to see a firenado form right before our eyes. These swirling fire whirls are rare and dangerous,” said one of the firefighters on the scene.
