Blaze Sparks Evacuation of 11 in East London Flats
A fierce fire ripped through two flats in Aldgate, East London, on Sunday evening, forcing 11 residents to flee their homes.
Fire Erupts on Leman Street High-Rises
The blaze broke out just before 5.45pm, engulfing flats on the sixth and seventh floors of a residential block on Leman Street. Around 100 firefighters from stations including Whitechapel, Shadwell, Shoreditch, Dowgate, and Bethnal Green sprang into action after 15 emergency calls flooded in.
Swift Fire Brigade Action Brings Blaze Under Control
Thanks to a rapid response, crews had the fire under control by 7.30pm. Borough Commander Lucy Macleod, present at the scene, praised her team’s efforts:
“Crews acted swiftly to bring the fire under control, but will remain on site this evening to damp down remaining hotspots. Road closures are currently in place, and there is significant congestion in the surrounding area. We urge the public to avoid the vicinity while we continue to make the scene safe.”
One of the Brigade’s 64-metre turntable ladders was used as an observation tower, giving firefighters a vital high-angle view to coordinate their tactics.
No Injuries Yet, Investigation Under Way
Thankfully, no injuries have been reported as all 11 evacuees were safely led out by firefighters. The London Fire Brigade is now working closely with partner agencies to help displaced residents and uncover what sparked the fire.
Road closures remain in place with severe traffic delays in the area. Commuters are urged to check travel updates and avoid Leman Street while emergency crews finish securing the site.
