TfL Slams Drivers Ignoring Gallows Corner Closure Rules

Transport for London (TfL) has fired a sharp warning at motorists flouting strict restrictions during the full shutdown of the Gallows Corner roundabout and flyover in Romford.

The key junction closed completely at 9pm on Monday, 23 June, allowing access only to black cabs, buses, and emergency vehicles. The closure, part of a major overhaul, sparked chaotic delays in Tuesday’s morning rush as drivers scrambled to follow new diversions.

Drivers Flouting Vital Road Rules

Despite clear signage, TfL reports some motorists are blatantly ignoring the restrictions. A TfL spokesperson said:

“For the safety of everyone using the road network and people working on this project, drivers must follow instructions on road signs. Enforcement action could be taken against drivers who do not follow these vital rules.”

Though TfL hasn’t named exact penalties, CCTV cameras have been spotted monitoring the area—fines or other enforcement measures could be on the cards for offenders.

Long-Term Closure Means Delays and Diversions

The shutdown at Gallows Corner will last for several months with significant travel disruption expected. Clear alternative routes are in place, and residents are urged to plan journeys carefully and leave extra time.

Safety First – No Excuses

The flyover’s long-standing safety and structural issues make this upgrade crucial. TfL reminds drivers to:

  • Follow all posted signs and diversion routes
  • Avoid unauthorised access during restricted times
  • Report any safety concerns to TfL or police immediately

Break the rules and you could face penalties. TfL is making it clear: safety on Romford’s roads comes first.
