Fashion titan Hubert de Givenchy dies aged 91
French fashion legend Hubert de Givenchy has passed away at 91, his partner Philippe Venet confirmed. The iconic designer dressed some of the most glamorous women on the planet, including Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Jackie Kennedy.
Givenchy’s legacy lives on through Audrey Hepburn
Givenchy’s name will forever be linked to the little black dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in the timeless classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Hepburn once said, “It was…an enormous help to know that I looked the part…Then the rest wasn’t so tough anymore. Givenchy’s lovely simple clothes gave me the feeling of being whoever I played.” Their 40-year friendship made her his ultimate muse, as he also styled her for Funny Face (1957) and How to Steal a Million (1966).
From couture to cultural icon
Givenchy hit fame in the 1950s and spent three decades dressing the world’s most beautiful and influential women. He revolutionised womenswear by introducing separates, giving them more freedom to mix and match. Plus, he was one of the first designers to launch his own perfume line.
A style enduring through the decades
His influence is still felt today. Even at this year’s Oscars, Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman sported a custom Givenchy creation, proving the designer’s legacy is as relevant as ever.
