Government Drops New COVID-19 Rules to Tackle Virus Spread

The government has unleashed fresh guidance aimed at stopping the spread of COVID-19 across key sectors like schools and transport. The updated advice, from Public Health England (PHE), spells out what businesses and individuals need to do if symptoms show up, and how to keep the bug at bay.

New Rules for Workplaces and Travel Hubs

  • Transport hubs to blast announcements reminding travellers to wash hands before and after journeys
  • Anyone coughing or running a high temperature must head home or stay in their room immediately
  • If using public transport while unwell, people should keep their distance and cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue
  • Regularly touched surfaces need to be cleaned and disinfected with standard products

Businesses aren’t being told to shut shop unless local Public Health England teams or the government say so.

Keep Calm and Wash Hands – The Government’s Top Tip

The latest move comes as Health Secretary Matt Hancock pumps up a public awareness campaign urging self-isolation for seven days at the first sign of a new continuous cough or fever, no matter how mild.

“Our goal is to protect life by protecting the vulnerable and the NHS,” Hancock said. “Everyone has a part to play. This updated guidance gives clear instructions on what to do if symptoms appear and stresses the importance of regular handwashing.”

Experts Back Up the Message

“The most important actions people can all take are to wash their hands regularly, stay at home when symptomatic, however mild, and clean surfaces often,” said Nick Phin, Deputy Director at PHE’s National Infections Service.

Get Help Online, Not at the GP

The government is also pushing folks to check symptoms and get advice via NHS.UK/coronavirus instead of turning up at a doctor’s office, helping ease pressure on healthcare services.
