Massive Crane Smashes Bungalow in Basingstoke Chaos
A huge 27-tonne telescopic mobile crane toppled over this morning, smashing into a bungalow and causing chaos in Basingstoke, Hampshire. The crane’s boom crashed right through the roof, crushing part of the house and a portable toilet used by builders on site.
Driver Trapped but Unhurt After Crane Topples
The driver was trapped inside the cab when the crane lost balance just before 10am at Pitman Close. Firefighters rushed to the scene, using an aerial platform to free the operator—who, thankfully, escaped without injury.
Bungalow Front Wall and Roof Devastated
- The crane smashed through the building’s front wall and demolished part of the roof under construction.
- A portable toilet at the site was completely crushed, but no one was inside at the time.
Emergency Services Respond Swiftly
Five fire units from Basingstoke 1 Station attended, with one crew staying after the rescue for vehicle and building stabilisation. Hampshire Fire Service confirmed:
“The Aerial Ladder Platform was used to help extricate the man trapped in the cab who fortunately escaped injury. After the stop message at 11:06, one crew remained on scene for vehicle and building stabilisation.”
Investigation Underway
The Health and Safety Executive is now probing the incident to find out what caused the massive crane to tip over.
A second crane was later brought in to remove the wrecked beast from the roof of the bungalow, as locals look on in stunned disbelief.
