Isle of Wight Festival 2018: Traffic Plan Unveiled
The Isle of Wight Festival is nearly here, and big efforts are underway to keep traffic chaos at bay. Isle of Wight Council, Island Roads, and Hampshire Police have joined forces with event organisers to ensure the roads stay as clear as possible during this world-famous bash.
Smooth Traffic Flow Or Bust
The council and partners have green-lit a detailed traffic management plan. It covers parking arrangements, separates Red Funnel and Wightlink ferry traffic, and tightens coordination among all parties involved.
- Expect some delays — but they’ll do their best to keep disruption minimal.
- Main festival traffic from Red Funnel’s East Cowes terminal will follow York Avenue, Whippingham Road, then onto East Cowes Road to the festival car park.
- Vehicles from Wightlink at Fishbourne will be routed via Kite Hill, Wootton, Lushington Hill, and the Racecourse roundabout before joining East Cowes Road to park up.
Key Changes and Restrictions
From 11th to 27th June, a temporary bridge with a tight 6’6″ width limit will be installed at Sea Street, Newport Quay. Only smaller vehicles should use this bridge to reach the quay — big rigs must avoid it. Public access through Seaclose Park will also be restricted starting 11th June.
If any roadblocks or incidents crop up, festival traffic will be “stacked” in holding areas, then released once clear. Residents will receive regular traffic updates and details of road closures through local and social media channels.
One-Way System & Local Business Boost
Watch out for a one-way system on Fairlee Road, Newport, kicking in from lunchtime on Wednesday 20th June. Outbound traffic will be diverted up Staplers Road.
Councillor Ian Ward said: “Thanks to close partnership working, we’re set to keep disruption to a minimum. Newport will remain open for business throughout the festival, and I urge everyone to support local shops and businesses during the event.”
