Heroic UK Firefighters Save Lives in Devastating Turkey Earthquake
Brad Rebbeck, crew manager at Deal fire station, played a crucial role in a daring rescue after the catastrophic earthquake struck Turkey and Syria. He recalled tunnelling through rubble to save a 60-year-old woman. “We’ve made such a difference in someone’s life that she wouldn’t be here if we hadn’t done what we did,” he said. “It’s definitely an experience I’ll never forget.”
Deadly Quake Brings Destruction and Chaos
The earthquakes hammered southeastern Turkey and neighbouring Syria, with the strongest quake registering 7.8 on the Richter scale. Thousands of buildings collapsed, leaving thousands trapped under metal and concrete. Aftershocks rattled the ruins, while plummeting temperatures made rescue efforts even more urgent and dangerous.
The disaster has impacted 13 million people in Turkey alone, according to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
UK Search-and-Rescue Team Spearheads Lifesaving Efforts
Members of the United Kingdom International Search and Rescue Team have been working tirelessly on the ground. Alongside saving the elderly lady, the team rescued two adults who had been trapped for five days, and a two-year-old girl who was stuck for over four days.
Nationwide UK Appeal Launched for Earthquake Victims
The Disasters Emergency Committee has launched a UK-wide appeal, supported by groups including the British Red Cross and Oxfam, to aid the hundreds of thousands affected by the quake.
Local businesses are also stepping up. The Turkish restaurant Alim-Et in Larkfield announced it will donate its entire weekly takings to help victims. Funds will be used to buy essentials like blankets, children’s clothes, baby food, toiletries, and canned goods.
