A major crash on the A27 at Falmer, Brighton, sparked chaos and snarled traffic all day. Emergency services, including Sussex Police and National Highways, rushed to the scene to manage the crisis and clear the wreckage.

A27 Reopens but Traffic Hell Continues

Sussex Police confirmed the A27 has now fully reopened after the earlier smash. A spokesperson said, “The A27 road closure has been lifted following the incident in Falmer. Please allow time for the congestion to ease. We thank the public for their patience.

Earlier, desperate drivers faced three-mile tailbacks in both directions. The eastbound carriageway reopened, but the westbound remained closed until later in the afternoon. Police urged motorists to seek alternative routes as they worked to clear the scene.

Severe Delays Around Falmer and Beyond

Congestion stretched back to Ashcombe Roundabout and towards Woodingdean. The crash happened near the B2123 The Drove at the Falmer/Rottingdean junction, close to the Amex Stadium, causing severe traffic delays throughout the area.

A Sussex Police spokesperson added, “The A27 is closed both ways between Hollingbury and Falmer following a serious collision. We ask drivers to take alternate routes while emergency services attend the scene. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

National Highways Warns: Expect Delays

A National Highways rep said, “The A27 in East Sussex is closed both directions between the B2123 (Falmer) and the A23 (Brighton) due to a serious collision. All emergency services are on site, with contractors assisting traffic management.

They warned the road closure would last well into the afternoon, advising drivers to plan ahead, consider alternatives or delay journeys.
