Train chaos hits Great Northern, Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express travellers this March! RMT union strikes on 16 and 18 March will gut services, leaving just a third of usual trains running – and some routes completely shut down.
Severe disruptions expected on strike days
Passengers face long waits and packed trains. Early mornings and late evenings will be the worst-hit times. Travellers are urged to avoid first and last trains if possible, travelling later and heading back earlier to dodge the crowds. Don’t count on alternative transport – none will be provided.
Southern and 1 Express attempt limited service
Southern promises more routes running than previous strike days but warns all trains will start late and finish early. 1 Express will offer a handful of services, but on strike days and the following mornings (17 and 19 March), expect late starts and reduced schedules.
Check before you travel – stations vary wildly
Customer Services Director Jenny Saunders apologises for the disruption and urges travellers to check live updates for their specific station at nationalrail.co.uk. Saunders said:
“I truly appreciate how hard this is going to be for our customers. These national strikes are terrible for everyone and are the last thing anyone wants as we try to regrow the railway after the pandemic.”
If you’re heading out on 16 or 18 March, stay informed and plan ahead. It’s set to be a rocky ride across these key routes.
