Massive Fire Breaks Out at Croydon’s Iconic ‘Wedding Cake’ Tower

Chaos erupted in Croydon late Sunday night as a fierce blaze tore through the basement of the famous No. 1 Croydon tower block, aka the ‘50p Building’ or ‘Wedding Cake’. Six fire engines and around 35 firefighters were scrambled just after 11pm to tackle the inferno.

Flames Engulf Basement of 24-Storey Landmark

The fire broke out in the basement of the towering 24-storey block on Addiscombe Road, right beside East Croydon station. Designed by Richard Seifert & Partners and completed in 1970, the 269-foot high building houses several big names, including Atkins, Directline Holidays, HotGen, dotdigital, Natterbox, and Global Resourcing.

Roads Shut Down as Firefighters Battle Blaze

Emergency crews remain on scene battling the ongoing fire. Multiple road closures are in place to aid firefighting efforts and keep the public safe. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but an investigation is underway.
