London Marathon Postponed to October Amid Coronavirus Chaos
The 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon, originally set for Sunday 26 April, has been pushed back to Sunday 4 October. The iconic race, marking its 40th year, won’t take place this spring due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Event Director Speaks Out
Hugh Brasher, the marathon’s Event Director, said:
“The world is facing an unprecedented global pandemic, and public health must come first. We know this postponement will disappoint many – from runners who’ve trained for months, the charities they support, to millions of fans watching every year.”
City Hall and Partners Rally Behind the Decision
Brasher praised the support from City Hall, London boroughs including Greenwich, Lewisham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, and the City of Westminster and City of London. Transport for London, emergency services, The Royal Parks, and BBC TV also lent a hand in finding a new date.
What’s Next for Runners and Charities?
Runners and charities will receive detailed info via email soon. The marathon team promises regular updates on their website and social media as they work through the new plans.
Mark your calendars: London will lace up for the marathon on Sunday 4 October 2020.
