Avian virus claims lives at Marwell Zoo! Several birds have sadly died after falling ill at the Hampshire wildlife park. The zoo is now ramping up protective measures to shield the rest of its feathered residents from the outbreak.
Birds Die Following Illness
The zoo confirmed that some birds succumbed to their illness. Details on the exact number have not been shared, but the loss has hit staff hard.
Strict Biosecurity in Place
Zoo spokesperson Maxwell revealed: “We are working with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) and the Department of Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to ensure all necessary biosecurity measures are in place.” Foot dips for guests remain active as a key precaution while investigations continue.
Visitor Access Limited but Zoo Open
Marwell Zoo remains open for regular daytime visits and the popular Glow Marwell evening event. However, guests cannot enter the Energy For Life: Tropical or walkthrough aviaries. This is to protect the remaining birds from exposure.
Animal Welfare Front and Centre
- Flamingos have been moved to a covered area of their enclosure.
- Penguins have been taken off-show for their safety.
- Dedicated animal and veterinary teams are working around the clock to safeguard animal health.
The zoo thanks visitors for their understanding and ongoing support during this challenging time.
