Universal Credit Clampdown: Stricter Job Rules Hit Thousands

Date: May 24, 2023 – The government’s latest Universal Credit shake-up is here, and it’s toughening up the rules for thousands of claimants. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has ramped up the “Administrative Earnings Threshold” (AET), meaning harder job search targets and tighter benefit checks.

What’s the Administrative Earnings Threshold?

The AET decides how much support you get from job coaches and how much you need to prove you’re hunting for work. Miss the mark, and sanctions could hit you – even losing your Universal Credit payments completely.

This hike is the third since last September, with earlier rises in September 2022 and January 2023. The DWP reckons around 400,000 people now face tougher job search demands thanks to these changes.

More Work Hours or More Pressure?

Here’s how it breaks down. If you earn less than the AET, you’re slapped into the “intensive work search” group. That means more meetings with job coaches and proof you’re seriously looking for work. Earn above it? You get the “light touch” regime with fewer hoops to jump through.

The latest jump pushes the AET to £892 a month for individuals (around 18 hours a week at National Minimum Wage) and £1,437 for couples (about 29 hours a week). The old limits were £677 and £1,083 respectively.

Government vs Critics

Officials say this isn’t about forcing people into longer hours but nudging them to land better-paid jobs. Those affected will be pinged by their Work Coach through the Universal Credit journal and must attend a Claimant Commitment Review interview – miss it, and sanctions follow.

But critics warn this crackdown could hit vulnerable claimants hard, increasing stress and financial insecurity while squeezing those already struggling.

Claimants, Stay Sharp!

If you’re on Universal Credit, watch out for updates and new rules. Stick to your Claimant Commitments or risk having your benefits cut. The message is clear: job search game is getting tougher – adapt or face the consequences.
