Hero Cop Dives into Frozen Lake to Save Dog and Owner
Freezing weather is proving deadly across the county, and authorities are warning locals to stay well clear of icy waters. Yesterday (12 December), officers on patrol at Silverwood Nature Reserve in Thrybergh, Rotherham, sprang into action after hearing desperate cries for help.
Drama at Silverwood Nature Reserve
From a high vantage point, the Off Road Bike Intervention Team spotted a woman and her dog struggling in the lake. The brave local had plunged into the freezing water to rescue her dog, which had broken through the ice after chasing a swan.
PC Jamie Walker didn’t hesitate. He jumped into the icy lake, grabbed the panicking dog, then helped the woman who was knee-deep and holding her second dog.
Cold Warning from Police Chief
“We share a multitude of advice as the cold 1 approaches, but it’s important that people don’t think ‘that won’t happen to me’,” said Operational Support Unit Chief Inspector Lee Carlson.
“Even your daily routines might need a rethink – like keeping your dog on a lead. This incident shows how easily you can get into trouble in icy waters.”

PC Walker’s Take on the Narrow Escape
After drying off and changing at a local police station, PC Walker returned to duty. He said: “Thankfully, everyone’s safe – though some soggy footwear was involved. But this could have ended much worse, especially after the tragic Solihull incident this week.
“Know where your dogs play — their usual spots may be a trap in winter. As the seasons change, so do the risks on your everyday walks.”
