Operation Brock is grinding back into gear on the M20 motorway this week, fueling fresh fury ahead of the late May bank holiday. The controversial contraflow system, despised by locals and commuters alike, will return to control traffic chaos heading to the Channel ports.

M20 Overnight Closures Begin This Wednesday

National Highways has confirmed the M20 will close overnight between Junction 8 (Maidstone) and Junction 9 (Ashford) from 8pm Wednesday, May 21 until 6am Thursday. The closure allows workers to install the dreaded barrier system needed for Operation Brock.

Why Operation Brock Is Back

  • The Kent and Medway Resilience Forum says the move is necessary due to expected high passenger numbers heading to Port of Dover and Eurotunnel.
  • Operation Brock will queue lorries on the coastbound carriageway while all other traffic is forced onto a contraflow system on the London-bound side.
  • The contraflow squeezes vehicles into narrow lanes with a 50mph speed limit across a punishing 13-mile stretch.

Local Outcry and Political Questioning

The system, branded a “massive inconvenience” by residents, continues to spark outrage. Kent MPs have publicly questioned if dragging out Operation Brock for every school holiday and bank holiday is really necessary.

Back in January, the government promised a long-term solution using digital tech and off-road lorry holding sites, but those plans are still very much in their infancy.

What Drivers Need to Know

  • On Wednesday night, fully signed diversions will be in place – drivers urged to follow official signs instead of sat-nav apps.
  • After reopening, all HGVs heading to mainland Europe must join Operation Brock at Junction 8.
  • Cars and local deliveries will be diverted into the contraflow system.

Operation Brock aims to stop gridlock from spilling onto local roads during Channel disruptions, but its frequent use has only deepened public frustration. With the busy bank holiday looming, expect more headaches on the M20.
