Gatwick Cracks Down on Banned Blades and Sprays
Authorities at Gatwick Airport are confiscating more banned items than ever. Small locking knives, multi-tools, and pepper sprays – legal abroad but illegal here – are being seized during routine searches.
Locking Blades and Pepper Spray Outlawed
Items like multi-tools with locking blades, often used for camping or outdoor activities, are now classed as offensive weapons under UK law. Possessing them can lead to criminal charges, with the items destroyed on the spot.
Likewise, pepper spray and incapacitant sprays, common in other countries, are strictly prohibited in the UK. Bringing these to the airport can land travellers in hot water with police.
Check Your Bags or Risk a Criminal Record
Chief Inspector Chris Veale warns: “We regularly see passengers carrying items that could be offences here. Many are surprised, especially if they haven’t flown since before the pandemic or use work bags that might contain such tools.”
He urges travellers to thoroughly check their luggage before heading to Gatwick. “If you’re unsure, contact your airline or visit the airport website for guidance.”
- Locking knives and multi-tools: banned under UK law.
- Pepper sprays and incapacitant sprays: illegal in the UK.
- Confiscation and criminal convictions possible.
- Check your bags carefully before travelling.
Don’t let a banned item ruin your trip – be vigilant and stay clear of legal troubles at the airport!
