Priti Patel Slashes Pub Curfews for Jubilee Bash
Home Secretary Priti Patel is giving pubs and clubs in England and Wales a late-night lifeline. From Thursday, 2 June to Saturday, 4 June, venues can stay open until 1am instead of the usual 11pm. But don’t expect supermarkets and off-licences to join the party – their alcohol sales hours remain the same.
Boost for Hospitality and a Toast to The Queen
Patel says this move will give a much-needed “boost” to the hospitality sector, battered by Covid restrictions. Plus, it’s a golden chance to raise a glass to Her Majesty as she marks 70 years on the throne.
“For seventy years Her Majesty The Queen has served the UK and the Commonwealth with the utmost dignity, steadfastness and resolve,” Patel said.
“The Platinum Jubilee is a truly historic national occasion, bringing families, friends and communities together to celebrate a remarkable reign.”
“Over the extended Bank Holiday weekend, we will be able to raise a glass to toast Her Majesty’s incredible service to our country, while also providing a boost to the hospitality industry after a challenging couple of years.”
Jubilee Celebrations Packed with Star-Studded Events
The Platinum Jubilee festivities include a live concert featuring global superstars, a thanksgiving service, and a day at the races. The highlight? The massive Jubilee Pageant in London on Sunday, 5 June.
More than 5,000 participants from across the UK and Commonwealth will take part in the pageant, set against the iconic Buckingham Palace. Expect dazzling street arts, theatre, music, and circus performances lighting up the capital.
Late Licenses: A Royal Tradition
This isn’t the first time the government has pushed pub closing times for big national events. Past occasions include the 2011 and 2018 royal weddings, the Queen’s 90th birthday party in 2016, and even the FIFA World Cup in 2014.
So Brits can get ready to party into the early hours – all in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee!
