England’s Hospital Waiting Lists Hit Record 7.68 Million

The NHS crisis deepens as the number of people waiting for routine hospital treatment in England rockets to a record 7.68 million by the end of July. This shatters the previous high of 7.57 million in June and marks the eighth straight month of rising waits — the worst since records began in 2007.

Hundreds of Thousands Waiting Over a Year

Shockingly, almost 390,000 patients have been stuck waiting over a year for treatment. Among them, 7,289 have endured delays exceeding 18 months. Both figures have climbed since June’s numbers of 383,083 and 7,177 respectively, showing no sign of relief.

“Targets to eliminate waits over 18 months by April, and over a year by March 2025, now look increasingly out of reach,” NHS insiders warn.

Cancer Care Under the Microscope

Cancer referral times are also lagging behind targets. In July, just 77.5% of cancer patients saw a specialist within two weeks — well below the 93% goal, which the government plans to scrap in October. The only silver lining: 74.1% of urgent cancer referrals were diagnosed or cleared within 28 days, nearly hitting the 75% target.

More Cash, But Big Challenges Ahead

The government has pledged an additional £200 million to help ease NHS pressures. But critics say it’s a drop in the ocean compared to the millions stuck in limbo. Without swift action, the NHS faces a mounting backlog and longer wait times that could put lives at risk.
