Three Missing After Early Morning Sea Collision off Jersey
A tense search is underway after a collision at sea off St Ouen’s Bay left a captain and two crew missing at dawn on Thursday.
Collision Involving Condor Ferries’ Commodore Goodwill
The Jersey Coastguard confirmed the Commodore Goodwill was involved in the crash at around 5.30am while sailing from Guernsey to Jersey. The freight vessel was carrying five passengers and 24 crew at the time.
Condor Ferries CEO John Napton said: “The master notified the Jersey Coastguard, and Goodwill has aided in the search and rescue.” The company pledged full cooperation with investigations.
Search Called Off Overnight, Specialised Dive Team to Take Over
Ports of Jersey confirmed the search was suspended overnight but will resume at first light Friday to review efforts using an offshore construction vessel with a remote-operated vehicle. Harbourmaster Bill Sadler revealed the fishing boat believed sunk in 40 metres of water.
He warned locating the vessel and crew will require specialised diving teams and advanced equipment.
Local Fishing Fleet Joins Hunt, Hope Still Alive
Jersey’s tight-knit fishing community has rallied to help in the search. Don Thompson, President of the Jersey Fishermen’s Association, said, “Everything is being done at the moment, and there is still hope of finding survivors.”
“The fishermen will band together… It’s great to see all of the boys out there.” Early reports saw wreckage surface, sparking cautious optimism in the ongoing ordeal.
Shipping Rerouted as Authorities Coordinate Rescue
Chief Minister Kristina Moore sent “thoughts and prayers” to the families affected by the incident. Commercial shipping has been rerouted to keep the search area clear as Jersey Coastguard leads the operation with local vessels.
