Driving Test Chaos: PCS Strike Hits DVSA Centres Nationwide
The PCS union has launched nationwide strike action over pay, pensions, jobs, and redundancy terms. This will hit driving test centres right across Great Britain, causing disruption and delays.
Which Driving Tests Are on the Line?
Tests that could be affected include:
- Car driving tests
- Motorcycle tests
- Lorry, bus, coach, and minibus tests (vocational)
- Tractor and specialist vehicle tests
- Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) part 2 (driving ability) and part 3 (instructional ability) tests
- ADI standards checks
- Moped and motorcycle compulsory basic training (CBT) checks – but not the training courses themselves
Good news: Theory tests won’t be affected.
Private Test Providers Unaffected
Your test won’t be disrupted if you’re booking through a private provider. This covers some Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) tests, including:
- 123. But act fast — you need to notify at least three clear working days before your test or face rebooking fees.
If you keep your test date, turn up as planned unless DVSA contacts you directly. DVSA will get in touch if your instructor test (ADI part 2, part 3, or standards check) is affected.
If Your Test is Cancelled
DVSA will rebook your test automatically and send new details within 5 to 10 working days. No need to call. If your trainer booked your test, refunds go to them and they’ll reschedule.
Claim Your Expenses
If your test is cancelled but you turned up, you can claim out-of-pocket expenses. Full details and the application form are available here: Claim expenses for a cancelled driving test.
DVSA apologises for the disruption and thanks everyone for their patience amid the turmoil.
